From the time I heard about the raw food diet,
I had considered feeding my dogs RMB (Raw Meaty Bones). The problem I had was that I didn't
have enough information about it to suddenly switch my pack over to RMB. I was also worried
about the warnings that most of us have grown up hearing, how not to feed your dog chicken
because they would choke on the bones.
However, everyday I fed the recommended one and half cups of kibble dog food twice a day to maintain
proper weight, my pack was never satisfied and was always hungry. I would increase their food intake and they
would start putting on too much weight.
I started researching the Raw Food diet by searching the internet, reading books by veterinarians and animal nutritionist, and speaking to a friend of mine who was feeding his GSD the RMB diet. I found vast amounts of information regarding the RMB diet and evidence that dogs were healthier and more satisfied when given this diet. Of course during my research I found a number of people against the whole idea of the diet including some veterinarians. However, they could not give me any evidence that the diet was not healthy.
The one site that was the most helpful in my transition and is highly recommended reading is
Leerburg.com
Here you will find samples of feeding and a FAQs page pertaining to the all natural diet. They even have a discussion forum under HEALTH ISSUES (All-Natural Diet for Dogs) where you can post questions that you may have. Many experienced Raw feeders are more than happy to answer your questions and guide you to further research.
There were several factors that lead me to switch to the all natural diet. During my research I found that dry kibble has only been given to dogs for about 60 years and before that people were feeding them an all natural diet. Another reason was the latest health scare about the contaminated dog food.
I have been feeding an all natural diet including RMB, vegetables, and vitamin supplements for 4 years. I have seen many drastic improvements. Some improvements are that the pack’s hunger is satisfied, their teeth are whiter, their coat is smoother and shinier, their muscle tone is more defined, and finally the look in their eyes tells me that they are happier and healthier.
In the very near future I will be adding more pages to our web site with examples of what and how we feed our dogs along with references and recipes.
Meanwhile, for more information feel free to use the form below for any questions, requests, or suggestions that you may have about the diet.
